Biography
Hal Moore was a United States Army officer who rose to the rank of lieutenant general. He is best known for leading the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment during the Battle of Ia Drang in November 1965, the first major battle between American and North Vietnamese forces in the Vietnam War. His leadership and the experiences of his soldiers were chronicled in the memoir "We Were Soldiers Once... and Young" (1992), co-authored with journalist Joseph L. Galloway. The book was adapted into the 2002 feature film "We Were Soldiers," in which Hal Moore was portrayed by actor Mel Gibson.
