Player was born on November 1, 1935, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He began playing golf at the age of 12 and turned professional at the age of 17.
Player's first major championship victory came at the 1959 British Open Championship. He won the Masters Tournament in 1961, 1962, and 1974. He won the US Open Championship in 1965 and 1974. And he won the British Open Championship again in 1968 and 1978.
Player is also a successful businessman. He has his own line of golf equipment and apparel and has written several books on golf.
Player is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame and the South African Golf Hall of Fame.
