Biography

Who is Segr Emilio?

Italian born, American physicist. In 1937 he discovered technetium, the first man-made element. In 1938 Segrè was fired from his position as Administrator of the Physics Laboratory at the University of Palermo because Mussolini had deemed that Jewish scientists should not be allowed to hold such posts. He then came to America, where he was a group leader in the Manhattan Project. In 1944 he made the crucial discovery that plutonium made in a nuclear reactor has higher levels of the isotope plutonium-240 than plutonium produced in a cyclotron. He is best known for his 21 September 1955 discovery with Owen Chamberlain of the antiproton, the unstable negatively charged proton that exists as the antiparticle of a proton. This helped to support Paul Diracs theory or antimatter, and earned the Chamberlain and Segrè the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1959. He died 22 April 1989, Lafayette, Ca, caused by heart attack. Biography at a Glance

Emilio Gino Segrè (February 1, 1905 – April 22, 1989) was an Italian‑American physicist whose work helped shape modern particle physics. Born in Tivoli, near Rome, he studied at the Sapienza University of Rome and contributed to the early Rome physics group led by Enrico Fermi. Because of anti‑Semitic laws he moved to the United States in the late 1930s, where he continued his groundbreaking research and teaching.

Career Highlights

  • Worked with Enrico Fermi's circle in Italy before emigrating to the United States.
  • Joined research programs in the United States, eventually becoming a leading figure at the University of California, Berkeley.
  • Co‑discovered the antiproton in 1955 with Owen Chamberlain using the Bevatron accelerator at Berkeley.
  • Shared the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1959 for the discovery of the antiproton, a milestone in understanding matter–antimatter symmetry.
  • Made lasting contributions to experimental nuclear and particle physics, training generations of physicists and advancing accelerator‑based science.

Key Contributions

The 1955 antiproton discovery demonstrated the existence of antiparticles with the same mass as protons but opposite charge. This work opened new avenues in high‑energy physics and helped confirm fundamental symmetries in nature. Segrè’s leadership at Berkeley and his collaboration with Chamberlain were central to the Bevatron era of particle discovery.

News and Public Record

Because Segrè passed away in 1989, there are no contemporary news cycles about new research from him. Notable historical milestones include:

  • 1955: Discovery of the antiproton with Owen Chamberlain at the Bevatron in Berkeley.
  • 1959: Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to Chamberlain and Segrè for the antiproton discovery.
  • Legacy continues through institutional histories, commemorations, and ongoing discussions of antimatter in physics education and outreach.

  • University and laboratory histories that discuss Segrè’s work (e.g., UC Berkeley Physics and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory public pages).

Publications and Legacy

Segrè’s research spanned experimental nuclear physics and early particle physics. His published work, lectures, and Nobel lecture summarized his pivotal role in establishing antimatter studies and accelerator‑based discoveries. His influence endures in the way modern experiments are designed, executed, and interpreted in high‑energy physics.
