Indian American spiritual leader, also known as Maharaji and formerly known as Guru Maharaj Ji and Balyogeshwar, who teaches a meditation practice he calls Knowledge. At the age of eight, Rawat succeeded his father Hans Ji Maharaj as leader of the Divine Light Mission (Divya Sandesh Parishad) and as the new Satguru (lit. Perfect Master) to millions of Indian followers. He gained further prominence when he traveled to the West at age 13 to spread his message. His claimed ability to impart direct knowledge of God attracted a great deal of interest from young adults but he was ridiculed by the media for his youth and his supposed divine status. By the end of 1973 the DLM was active in 55 countries and tens of thousands of followers had been initiated. As his mission gained momentum, he gained a Mercedes Benz, a Lotus sports-car and a half million dollar home in Malibu, California. In May 1974, a judge gave Rawat his consent to marry without parental permission. He and his wife had four children. Link to Wikipedia biography Read less
