Dasha Calculator See your Vimshottari Mahadasha and Antardasha dates

A dasha is a planetary period. In the Vimshottari system, 120 years are shared among the nine grahas in a fixed order, and life begins in the Mahadasha of the planet that rules the nakshatra your Moon was in at birth. Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas, and each Antardasha into nine Pratyantardashas.

Enter your birth details

Use the time from your birth certificate if you have it. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so the birth time sets how much of the first Mahadasha was left at birth, and with it every date that follows.

Local clock time at the place of birth.

Why the birth time matters

The first Mahadasha is only the part that was left at birth. It depends on how far the Moon had travelled through its nakshatra, and the Moon moves about half a degree an hour. An hour's difference in the birth time moves every dasha date that follows by about three months when the first Mahadasha is a 6- or 7-year one, and by about ten months when it is Venus's 20 years.

If the Moon was very close to the edge of a nakshatra at birth, a small change in the birth time can even change the first Mahadasha lord. Use the time on your birth certificate if you have it.

How DKSCORE works out your dashas

  • From DKSCORE's chart engine

Every date on this page comes from DKSCORE's chart engine, the same one behind the DKSCORE app, so the two show the same periods for the same birth details.

  • Vimshottari order

The nine lords follow a fixed order: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17, a total of 120 years.

  • Starts from the Moon's nakshatra

The first Mahadasha is that of the lord of the nakshatra your Moon was in at birth. Only the part of the nakshatra the Moon had not yet crossed counts, so the first Mahadasha is usually shorter than its full length.

  • Antardashas and Pratyantardashas

A Mahadasha is divided among all nine lords in the same order, starting with its own lord, each in proportion to its years. An Antardasha is divided into Pratyantardashas the same way.

  • Sidereal chart

The Moon's position comes from a sidereal chart with the Lahiri ayanamsa for your date, time and place of birth. The result also states the length of year used for the dates.

FAQ

Dasha calculator: questions and answers

What is a Mahadasha?
A Mahadasha is a major planetary period in the Vimshottari dasha system. There are nine, one for each graha, and they run one after another in a fixed order over 120 years: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn and Mercury. Astrologers read a Mahadasha with the position of its lord in your birth chart.
What is an Antardasha?
An Antardasha, also called a bhukti, is a sub-period inside a Mahadasha. Every Mahadasha has nine, one for each lord, starting with the Mahadasha lord's own Antardasha and then following the Vimshottari order. Each takes a share of the Mahadasha in proportion to its lord's years.
What is a Pratyantardasha?
A Pratyantardasha is a sub-period inside an Antardasha, divided among the nine lords in the same way. Most last from a few days to a few months. The result shows the nine inside your current Antardasha.
How is the Mahadasha at birth found?
From the Moon. The nakshatra the Moon was in at birth gives the first Mahadasha: its lord's period. How far the Moon had already travelled through that nakshatra gives how much of the period had passed, and the rest is the balance of dasha at birth. The Mahadashas that follow run for their full length.
Which Mahadasha am I running now?
Enter your date, time and place of birth. The result shows the Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha running on today's date in your browser, with the date each one started and the date it runs until.
Why does another calculator show different dasha dates?
The most common reasons are the birth time, which changes the balance at birth, and the ayanamsa: software that uses another one, such as KP or Raman, places the Moon slightly differently. Some software also uses a different length of year for the dasha periods. The result states the method behind its dates.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes. The Moon moves about half a degree an hour, so the birth time sets the balance at birth, and every dasha date after it moves with that balance. Use the time on your birth certificate if you have it.
Are my birth details saved?
Your details are used only to calculate the result. They are not saved to an account or profile, and they are never added to the page address or sent to analytics.

A dasha is read together with your birth chart. An astrologer looks at the lord of each period, its house and sign, and your transits.
