What the calculator shows

Everything comes from one chart calculation, the same one the Lagna calculator uses.

  • Three reference points

The house of Mars counted from your Lagna, from your Moon and from Venus, each with its sign and a yes or no for a Manglik house.

  • A one-line summary

Which of the three points Mars is in a Manglik house from, stated plainly, for example from the Lagna and the Moon.

  • The 2nd house, called out

When Mars is in the 2nd house from a point, the result says so and gives the count with the 2nd house too.

  • Cancellation factors

Three exceptions from our Manglik guide, checked against your chart: Mars in the sign of a friend (the Sun, the Moon or Jupiter), Mars exalted or in its own sign, and Jupiter or Venus aspecting Mars. Each says whether it applies and what the guide says it does.

  • Mars's sign

The sign Mars is in, and whether it is one of its own signs (Mesha, Vrishchika), its exaltation sign (Makara) or its debilitation sign (Karka).

  • Your Lagna chart

Your birth chart in North Indian or South Indian style, so you can see Mars, the Moon and Venus in their houses.

  • Notes when it matters

If your Lagna, Moon, Venus or Mars sits close to the edge of a sign, the result says which count could change and how.

Why the birth time matters

The house of Mars from your Lagna depends on the Lagna, and the Lagna changes sign about every two hours. A birth time that is off by an hour can move Mars into a different house from the Lagna.

The Moon moves about 13° a day, so the count from the Moon can change too when the Moon is near the edge of a sign. Mars and Venus move about a degree a day or less, so the count from Venus rarely depends on the birth time. If the result shows a note about an edge, that count is the one to double-check.

How DKSCORE checks for Manglik dosha

  • Positions from your chart

DKSCORE calculates your chart in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa for your date, time and place of birth. This page then applies the Manglik rule to that chart.

  • Counted from three points

The house of Mars is counted from the sign of your Lagna, the sign of your Moon and the sign of Venus. Mars in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from a point is a Manglik house from that point. The 2nd is noted separately.

  • Whole-sign houses

The sign of the reference point is the 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. Mars's house is the house of its sign.

  • Cancellation factors, not a verdict

The cancellation factors are the exceptions listed in our Manglik guide that a birth chart decides; aspects are counted by whole sign (Jupiter on the 5th, 7th and 9th sign from it, Venus on the 7th). The calculator shows which apply, in the guide's words, and never grades the dosha or calls it cancelled.

FAQ

Manglik dosha calculator: questions and answers

What is Manglik dosha?
Manglik dosha, also called Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha, is a placement of Mars in the birth chart. A chart is called Manglik when Mars falls in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house counted from a reference point such as the Lagna; some traditions also count the 2nd. Astrologers look at it mainly when matching charts for marriage.
How does this calculator check for Manglik dosha?
DKSCORE calculates your chart (sidereal zodiac, Lahiri ayanamsa, whole-sign houses) and this page applies the rule to it. It counts the house of Mars from the sign of your Lagna, your Moon and Venus. For example, in a chart with a Vrishabha Lagna, the Moon in Dhanu, Venus in Meena and Mars in Mesha, Mars is in the 12th house from the Lagna, the 5th from the Moon and the 2nd from Venus, so it is in a Manglik house from the Lagna, and from Venus too where the 2nd house is counted. The result shows these counts for your own chart.
Why are the Moon and Venus checked as well as the Lagna?
Many astrologers count Mars from the Moon and from Venus as well as from the Lagna. The Moon sign is widely used as a second ascendant, and Venus is the planet traditionally linked with marriage. The calculator shows each point separately, so you can see which ones the placement comes from.
Does Mars in the 2nd house make a chart Manglik?
Traditions differ. Many astrologers, especially in South India, include the 2nd house; many in North India count only the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th. This calculator uses the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th. When Mars is in the 2nd house from any point, the result says so and also gives the count with the 2nd house.
Which cancellation factors does the calculator check?
Three exceptions from our Manglik guide. Mars in the sign of a friend, the Sun (Simha), the Moon (Karka) or Jupiter (Dhanu, Meena), may not be considered Manglik. Mars exalted (Makara) or in its own sign (Mesha, Vrishchika) has its negative effects mitigated. Jupiter or Venus aspecting Mars can reduce its malefic effects. The calculator shows which apply to your chart. It does not grade the dosha or call it cancelled: how much these factors weigh, along with others such as the partner's chart, is for an astrologer reading your whole chart.
Do I need my exact birth time?
Yes. The house of Mars from your Lagna depends on the Lagna, which changes sign about every two hours, and the Moon moves about 13° a day. Use the time on your birth certificate if you have it. If your Lagna or Moon is close to the edge of a sign, the result tells you which count could change.
Why does another calculator show a different result?
There are a few common reasons. Some calculators count only from the Lagna, or from the Lagna and the Moon. Some include the 2nd house and some do not, and some apply cancellation rules to give a yes or no. Some use house cusps instead of whole-sign houses, or a different ayanamsa, and a different birth time or time zone changes the chart as well. This calculator shows each count and the rule it uses, so you can compare.
Does this calculator match two charts?
No. It looks at one birth chart. In kundali matching, astrologers compare both charts, including Mars in each, along with the rest of the match. This calculator does not predict anything about a marriage.
Are my birth details saved?
Your details are used only to calculate the result. They are not saved to an account or profile, and they are never added to the page address or sent to analytics.
Read it with your whole chart

Have your Mars placement read by a Vedic astrologer.

Whether a Manglik placement is reduced or cancelled depends on rules that vary between traditions. An astrologer reads it with your whole chart, and with your partner's chart for matching.
